Silver
Certificates

In accordance with an Act of Congress, dated February 28,
1878, the Department of the Treasury issued to the public
Silver Certificates which could be exchanged for silver
dollars. On March 25, 1964, the Secretary of the Treasury
announced that Silver Certificates would no longer be
redeemable for silver dollars. Subsequently, another act of
Congress dated June 24, 1967, provided that Silver
Certificates could be exchanged for silver bullion for a
period of one year, until June 24,1968. Even though silver
certificates are no longer printed, those which remain
outstanding are still legal tender and can be spent just like
a Federal Reserve Note.

AKA Black Eagle. Bill has
the American Eagle over the heads of Presidents Lincoln and
Grant. This one appears to have some burning on the
right side but it does not carry through to the rear of the
bill. Perhaps an old war injury? Strong vignettes
of the eagle and presidents. Rare signatures, shame
about the strange front damage.

AKA Porthole Washington.
Head of Washington between figures of Mechanics and
Agriculture. These are the last of the figures of
god-type spirits on bills, carried over from the Educational
Series of 1896. This one has some damage on the lower
right corner as well as at the top center fold. This is
a rare note with a rare signature. These, with other $2
bills, are becoming very hot items and are getting very hard
to find in good condition.

Head of Washington.
Scrolled artwork reverse. This one is well circulated
and has two tear-spots on the bottom border, but otherwise, no
pinholes on this slightly browned example of the last of the
large notes. This is the scarce Woods / White signature
combination.
