From 1863 to 1935, National Bank Notes were issued in many
denominations by thousands of banks throughout the country and
in U.S. territories during three charter periods. As of
January 1, 1929, there were more than 7,600 National Banks in
existence. The chartering of banks and administrative control
over the issuance of National Bank Notes were the
responsibility of the Office of the Comptroller of the
Currency.
National Bank Notes are still redeemable by the Department of
the Treasury at their face amount only; however, they may have
added value in the numismatic market. The Bureau of Engraving
and Printing, as part of the Department of the Treasury, does
not appraise or estimate numismatic values. It is suggested
that you contact several dealers in old or rare currencies for
an opinion. Dealers' names are usually listed in the
classified section of the telephone directory under the
headings of "Coins" and "Hobbies." You may
also refer to numismatic publications which contain pictures
of the various notes and list suggested prices.
